You've probably heard this phrase before and felt it when applying for a scholarship. Yes, applying for a scholarship can be a hopeful and challenging process. Many applicants actually have potential, but many fail to make it through the scholarship selection process because of mistakes that could have been avoided. So that you don't get stuck in the same hole, let's recognize these common mistakes and learn how to overcome them.

1. Too Tight When Submitting an Application

When your motivation letter sounds clichéd, impersonal, and does not show relevance to the vision of the scholarship program, scholarship selectors will certainly not give you a second glance.

Solution: Write honestly, specifically, and based on personal experience. Mention why you are interested in the program, and how this scholarship will help you achieve your academic and professional goals.

3. Ignoring Scholarships Criteria

When applying for a scholarship, try to understand the vision and mission of the scholarship first, that way you'll know what the scholarship provider is looking for in its recipients. Are they focused on finding candidates who have good leadership skills? Do you contribute to the environment? Or proficient in a particular field of study? These are usually listed in the detailed requirements and criteria. If you don't meet them, you'll be eliminated at an early stage.

Solution: Read all the scholarship information carefully, you can get this from the official website, official social media, or ask scholarship awardees. You can also make a checklist of scholarship requirements & criteria. 

4. Not Preparing for The Interview

Interviews are not just a formality but interviews can be said to be the key to scholarship selection. Why is that? Because it is at this stage that the scholarship selectors will meet directly with you, the scholarship applicant. They will assess your readiness, your motivation, your character, and your speaking style and gestures. It's also not uncommon for them to ask trick questions so be careful!

Solution: Practice your interview with friends, mentors and family. In addition, you can also study common questions, understand the scholarship program, and prepare honest and convincing answers.
