Most people dream of studying abroad for free with a scholarship. Are you one of them? If so, this article is for you.

Applying for an overseas scholarship is not just about academic grades and language skills. Sometimes, there is one document that is often a major consideration in the scholarship selection process, namely the study plan. This study plan will show how clear and realistic your educational goals are, as well as how the study program you choose will contribute to your future. 

So, in order not to be confused when compiling it, here are some tips for making a strong and convincing study plan.

1. Know the Purpose and Format of The Study Plan

Before you start writing, understand what the scholarship organizer is asking for. Some scholarship providers ask for a study plan in the form of a free essay, while others ask specific questions such as:

• What is your motivation for choosing the program and university?
• What do you want to study in particular?
• What are your plans after graduation?

2. Write a Clear Background and Motivation

The opening of a study plan usually contains your educational background and relevant experience. You can briefly tell how your interest in the field of study was formed and what motivates you to pursue higher studies. Avoid overly general sentences such as “I want to study abroad to broaden my horizons,” and replace them with more specific and personal reasons.

Example:

"During my undergraduate studies in Environmental Engineering, I was active in household waste treatment research. This interest grew when I joined a student exchange program in South Korea, where I saw first-hand the advanced yet efficient water treatment technology."

3. Describe Your Study Plain in Detail!

Show that you've done your research on the course you want to take. You can also describe courses that you find interesting or teaching methods that are unique. Include short and long term plans for your studies.

"I am interested in the Master in Environmental Engineering program at TU Munich because it offers courses such as ‘Sustainable Water Management’ and ‘Renewable Energy Technologies’. In the first year, I will focus on strengthening my theoretical foundation and in the second year I would like to do a research project in Prof. Müller's lab X."

4. Relate Studies to Career Plans 

Scholarships are not just about studying, but also about what you will contribute after graduation. Explain how you will apply your knowledge to build your career and contribute to society or your home country.

Example:

"After completing my studies, I plan to return to Indonesia to work in the urban water management sector. I want to develop affordable decentralized water treatment systems for small towns and underdeveloped areas."

With the right strategy, from understanding the format, conveying strong motivation, detailing your study plan, to linking your studies with future plans, your study plan can be a major strength in your overseas scholarship application.
